Have mercy on us, O God, in Your loving-kindness. In Your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin.  Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us.  Do not cast us from Your presence, or take Your Holy Spirit from us.  Restore to us the joy of Your salvation and sustain us with Your bountiful Spirit through Jesus Christ, our Lord. RENEWAL OF THE BAPTISMAL COVENANT

FOR A CONGREGATION

This worship service comes from the Presbyterian Church’s Book of Common Worship.  In the Presbyterian Church, we observe only one baptism for the remission of sins, but there are many times when we may feel the need to renew our baptism or to renew our covenant with Christ.  As we stand near the beginning of a new year, it is appropriate for us to renew our baptism vows.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Minister:  Do you believe in God the Father?

People:    I believe in God the Father almighty, who made heaven and earth.

Minister:  Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

People:   I believe in Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, who was crucified, died and was buried.  I believe He rose from the dead, and that He will come again to judge the world.

Minister:  Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

People:    I believe in the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to live as God’s children.

Minister: Do you renounce all evil, and powers in the world which defy God's righteousness and love?

People:    I renounce them.

Minister:  Do you renounce the ways of sin that separate you from the love of God?

People:    I renounce them.

Minister:  Have you turned to Jesus Christ and accept Him as your Lord and Savior?

People:   I have turned to Jesus Christ and have accepted Him as my Lord and Savior.

Those who desire to come and to renew your baptism, may come forward during the Invitational Hymn, as you feel led by God.  Others may remain standing as we continue to sing praise to God.

O Lord, uphold us by Your Holy Spirit.  Daily increase in us Your gifts of grace: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in Your presence, both now and forever.   Amen
